The Dalai Lama’s clarification concerning his position with respect to the ‘Karmapas’ controversy.

The Asiaweek of october 20th 2000 made investigations during several weeks on the controversy of the two Karmapas.
It is the first time that a journalist, Julian Gerring, doesn't take the press releases spread by Urgyen Trinley Dorje's disciples for gospel truth and attempts to understand the reasons of such a story.
The journalist met the main protagonists involved in the recognition of the two Karmapas and also encountered the Karmapas themselves. He gives a new geopolitical light to this interesting story.

About the "International Karma Kagyu Conference" : The Times of India (08-15-00)

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche met the Dalaï Lama on June 20th 2000 in Washington. He told him that he accepted Urgyen Trinle, approved by China and some high Kagyu dignitaries, as being a Karmapa who would rule in China. Indeed, Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche doesn't wish, in any matter what so ever, to oppose himself to the Kagyupa disciples or to the Tibetan and Chinese politicians who recognize Urgyen Trinley as a Karmapa. On the other hand, he reaffirms that the only authentic 17th Gyalwa Karmapa designed according to the Kagyupa tradition is Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Some information on the Karmapas, on the Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje and on the controversy of the two Karmapas, by Martina Draszczyk (translator at the International Buddhist Institute of the Karmapa in New Delhi, in India).

The Karmapa delivers us his first impressions on his Asian and Western disciples, which he encounters since November 1999. He also briefly explains the meaning of the tantric initiations and blessings. A very rich interview which shows the wideness of the wisdom of this only 17 year old Bodhisattva.

Kunzik Shamar Rinpoche gives us more details on the recognition of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa.

Shamar Rinpoche, the highest dignitary in the Karma Kagyu lineage after the Gyalwa Karmapa, retraces the main steps which led him to recognize the Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Last January Shamar Rinpoche expressed himself about the controversy concerning the two Karmapas. He gives us some old and recent historical elements which lighten this question.

Last January, all the news papers all over the world accepted the incredible story of the escape from China of Urgyen Trinley Dorje, as told by his disciples. Thanks to such a 21st century fairy tale a legend could take place. Nevertheless, it seems that the truth is a little bit different and not so wonderful. The political implications, in particular of the CIA and of the Tibetan government in exile, could be obvious since the beginning of this very well prepared escapade. Susanna Cheung Chui-Yung attempted to see clearer in this story. Very strangely the wild world press refused to spread her discoveries which could darken the legend of this escape.
